SlasherMan Post Mortem #Devtober2020
Hi !
This year i decided to go serious about video game development, and joined my first jam, Devtober 2020 !
I am very happy about the result, not losing focus for the entire month was the main objective, but i never anticipated to finish the game, but i did ! Many things were scary but ended up easier than expected, others the other way around.
What went good: Keeping it for the whole month ! Heavily inspired by the success of HADES, i pretty quickly got the idea of the game, and went from that. Scope happened to be just right for the first time ! I discovered and used Trello, making things visual and easier to follow and sort. I'm particularly happy of my "Might do later" section that helped me get the essentials done. I learned so much i couldn't even say it all. The daily tweet as short devlogs that i imposed myself were nice too, helping with the rythm (and allowed me to share to friends which is always a great feeling)
What went wrong: In the end it was harder to keep up the motivation, with others ideas rushing in. The Jam concept helped a lot, i could say to myself "yeah yeah this is a great idea but i'll start AFTER October". The struggle was hard with the music, as i tried to imitate HADES music, which is very particular and don't match my game at all. Took me some time to realise why it was wrong, but then i could start fresh with better ideas.
I'm not a fan of the fast jam for my style, i like to develop many aspect. This one month Jam was great and exactly what i needed ! Thanks !
